AMD Launches New AI Chips to Compete with Nvidia

Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

The next generation of AI chips from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was shown off at the Computex 2024 forum on Sunday. This came just one day after NVIDIA showed off its own next generation of AI chips.

AMD  announced a new version of its Ryzen CPUs that are meant to help AI development on laptops and desktops. The MI325X accelerator is the company’s newest top-of-the-line AI chip, and it will be available in the fourth quarter of 2024.

AMD also announced the MI350, a new line of AI chips that will be available in 2025. It was said that the company would work with Microsoft and Zoom Video Communications to add more AI features to consumer electronics. Nvidia, a competitor and market leader, just showed off its next generation of AI chips a few hours before AMD did. The company’s current chip architecture, called “Blackwell,” was still being made and was set to ship later in 2024. The new architecture, called “Rubin,” came out at the same time.

Nvidia took over about 80% of the global AI chip market over the past year, and AMD has been unable to catch up. The second one’s value has also gone up by more than three times in the past year, thanks to higher demand for AI. AMD’s value has also doubled this year, but its sales and value have been much lower than Nvidia’s.
