YouTube’s New AI Tools Music & Face Detection, Plus Creator AI Controls
YouTube introduced new AI detection tools to protect creators from unauthorized use of their voices and likenesses and expanded its Content ID system to address AI-generated music and ensure artists are compensated appropriately.
YouTube introduced new AI detection tools on Thursday to protect creators such as artists, actors, musicians, and athletes from having their voices and likenesses copied and used in other videos.
The new detection technology significantly enhanced YouTube’s existing Content ID system. The system now identifies copyright-protected content. The company plans to enhance this system by incorporating new synthetic singing identification technology, which can identify AI content that mimics the sound of human singing.
The company promises to develop additional detection technologies to identify when AI simulates someone’s face.
It’s also worth mentioning that YouTube is just starting to think of a way to stop people from using its videos to train AI models.
This has been a problem for a while now, and creators are upset that companies like Apple, Nvidia, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google have used their work for training without their permission or payment.
YouTube has only stated that it is working on a solution to help protect creators and increase revenue from AI training.”We’re working on new ways to let YouTube creators decide how other people can use their videos on our site.” “Later this year, we’ll have more to share,” the short message says.
At the same time, the company seems to be keeping its promise from last year that it would find a way to pay artists whose work was used to make AI music. At that time, YouTube began developing a solution in collaboration with Universal Music Group (UMG) and its signed artists.
Additionally, YouTube announced plans to expand its Content ID system, aiming to determine the rightful owners of rights who should receive payment when AI music utilizes their contributions. YouTube says that the Content ID system handles billions of claims every year and makes billions of dollars for creators and artists.
Testing AI Content ID Expansion
YouTube doesn’t talk about how to pay for AI music in its Thursday announcement, but it does say that it is almost ready to start a pilot of the Content ID system’s expansion, which will focus on this area. YouTube says that it will start testing the technology for identifying fake singing with its partners at the beginning of next year.
Another idea that is still in its early stages of development will let famous people like actors, musicians, creators, athletes, and others find and control AI-made YouTube videos that show their faces.
This would help a lot to stop people from having their likeness used to trick YouTube viewers, like when they say they support a product or service but don’t really, or when they assist spread false information. YouTube has only stated that they are working on this system, without specifying when it will be ready for testing.
“As AI improves, we think it should make people more creative instead of taking it away.” YouTube said in an announcement, “We’re committed to working with our partners to make sure that future advances amplify their voices, and we’ll continue to develop guardrails to address concerns and reach our common goals.”
