YouTube makes it easier to report and remove AI deepfakes
YouTube has made it easier to report deepfake videos that use your likeness as a privacy issue. This is a change in how the company handles AI-generated content.
It’s now easier than ever to deepfake someone else’s voice or face. But YouTube is making some small changes that will make it easier to report a video that uses your likeness without your permission.
Before, you could only report these impersonations as misleading, but now you can use the privacy request process to ask YouTube to take down deepfakes.
Because of this change, we can tell that YouTube sees deepfakes as a privacy issue rather than a content moderation issue.
It is a privacy issue. The more AI tools we have, the more often we will use them in harmful ways.
YouTube’s Approach to Video Moderation
YouTube says it won’t take down these videos right away. Instead, YouTube will consider factors such as the video’s parody or satire, the accessibility of the person who requested it, and whether it ridicules a public figure, for which YouTube promises a stricter standard.
The platform is also developing this process to eliminate deepfakes of copyrighted music, which are increasingly prevalent with tools such as Suno and Udio.
The effectiveness of this move hinges on its execution. It will be a win for everyone if YouTube can speed up the process of eliminating potentially harmful content.
