Shanghai’s Vision: Leading Global Medical AI Innovation by 2027

China is driving healthcare innovation with AI despite U.S. chip restrictions. Shanghai’s bold plan to become a global medical AI hub by 2027.

Shanghai wants to be the best place in the world for medical artificial intelligence (AI) by 2027. The city’s government has released a two-year plan to build biodata and advanced computing systems and boost research. The goal of this project is to improve healthcare services, such as traditional Chinese medicine, by using AI.

Even though the U.S. limits exports of advanced AI chips, Shanghai is eager to get past technological problems with big models and a lot of computing power. The plan also asks local banks to give money to medical AI companies.

Many artificial intelligence technologies are being applied rapidly in China’s healthcare market. For instance, services that utilize big ideas, such as ChatGPT, employ large language models (LLMs). These models can analyze clinical data and offer recommendations for evaluations and treatment plans. For instance, Shanghai East Hospital has developed MedGo, an LLM that’s supposed to assist doctors in decision-making regarding patients.

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology at Georgetown University says that China could be a star in this field because it is focusing on biodata and medical AI. A startup from Tsinghua University has also started trying Tairex, a virtual hospital platform with AI doctors who specialize in different fields.

U.S. sanctions make it harder to get high-end AI chips, but Chinese institutions are getting around this by using chips made in China. In one case, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics used chips from Huawei instead of U.S. suppliers to teach its new medical AI model.

China has ambitions to become an AI technological power in the world, especially in the healthcare sector, and Shanghai’s big plan is on its way. The city aims to be home to the world’s leading medical AI hub by 2027 through both capital investments and the promotion of innovations.
