Senator David Pocock Creates AI Deepfakes of Albanese, Dutton, Urges AI Ban

Senator David Pocock made AI deepfakes of Albanese and Dutton to call for quick legislation that would ban AI in election materials and warn of possible abuse in future campaigns.

David Pocock, an ACT senator, made and shared videos of the prime minister and the leader of the opposition that were made by AI as a reminder to pass laws about AI right away.

According to Senator Pocock, his videos showing the two leaders offering to ban gambling ads showed how easy it would be for AI to be abused in next year’s election campaigns.

A lot of people have talked about deepfakes and creative AI, but the government hasn’t said for sure if rules will be made in time for the federal election.

A video that was shared online seems to prove that advertising for gambling is completely banned, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s voice and face were seen in the video.

Instead, the video is a “deepfake” that was made by independent senator David Pocock using artificial intelligence.

Senator Pocock made the video and another one with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to show politicians how easy it is to make videos that look like them.

He put the videos on social media on Saturday and said that parliament had only five weeks to pass laws that would ban the use of AI in election materials or else they would be vulnerable to deepfakes like the ones he made.

Senator Pocock said it’s time for the government to protect our democracy and make sure that elections are fought and won based on ideas, not on who can make the best deepfakes or tell the most believable lies.
