Sam Altman Reveals OpenAI’s $200 ChatGPT Pro Faces Financial Troubles

Sam Altman reveals that OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro costs $200 per month and is experiencing financial difficulties despite offering advanced AI features and unlimited tool access.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said the company is having money problems with its ChatGPT Pro subscription service. The premium plan, which starts in late 2024 and costs $200 a month, gives you access to advanced AI features and removes restrictions on using OpenAI tools. Altman, however, said that the service has not been as profitable as hoped.

“We are currently losing money on OpenAI Pro subscriptions!” Altman made this statement in a recent post on X. Many more people use it than we initially believed.

He stated that the initial goal of the pricing strategy was to generate revenue, but it hasn’t performed as anticipated.

Even though it was worth more than $80 billion, OpenAI had a $5 billion loss in 2024 and only $3.7 billion in sales. In October 2024, the company got $6.6 billion in funding from big investors like Microsoft, Nvidia, Thrive Capital, and Khosla Ventures to keep going.

OpenAI continues to face challenges such as criticism and lawsuits. Co-founder and current CEO of xAI, Elon Musk, has sued OpenAI, saying that it has given up on its nonprofit mission and is unfairly competing with other AI companies. These new developments show that OpenAI’s path from innovation to making money is difficult.
