Russia, Iran, China Plan AI Tactics to Influence US Election: Report

A new annual US threat report released on Wednesday says that Russia, Iran, and China are becoming more of a threat because they are trying to influence the elections on November 5th. One way they are doing this is by using AI to spread false or divisive information.

The Department of Homeland Security report says that Russian “influence actors” have spread false stories about immigrants coming to the US to cause trouble. They have also used generative AI to make fake websites that looked like they were real US-based media sources.

The report said Iran’s attempts to have an effect on other countries have become more aggressive. DHS said that one example is when Iranian actors pretended to be activists online to get people to protest the war in Gaza.

The United States is getting ready for a close presidential election between democracy Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. This could make partisan tensions rise even more and give foreign enemies chances to try to mess up the democracy process.

According to the DHS report, Russia, Iran, and China will likely use a mix of illegal, subversive, and coercive methods to look for new ways to attack US democracy and social harmony at home.

The report also says that domestic violent extremists are a very serious threat. There have already been two reported attempts to kill Trump.

According to the research, domestic extremists are likely to try to do violent things to make voters, candidates, and election workers afraid and to mess up the voting process.

The report said the biggest threat comes from lone criminals or small groups of people who are angry about race, religion, gender, or government policies, the report said.
