OpenAI’s Game-Changer: ChatGPT Desktop Now Free for Windows Users

OpenAI says that the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows is now available for people on the free plan. Initially, only subscribers to the Education, Enterprise, plus plans could access it.

When the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows came out last month, only people with an Education, Enterprise, or Plus subscription could use it. But in a recent post on X, the company said that people on the free plan can also use it.

The Windows app for ChatGPT works the same way as the web version. It lets you ask any question, upload files, summarize text, access custom GPT, and even make images.

The desktop version of ChatGPT even has an Advanced Voice Mode, but free users can only use it for a few minutes a month.

OpenAI also added a bunch of new keyboard shortcuts to ChatGPT for Windows. These shortcuts let you start a new conversation, copy the last response, toggle the sidebar, and delete one. This is another quick way to get to the ChatGPT app: press “Alt+Space.”

People who use the ChatGPT Windows app can also take screenshots and send them to the AI chatbot. This is useful for asking ChatGPT about screen content. Find the ChatGPT app on the Microsoft Store or the OpenAI website, which links to the store. The app works on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

OpenAI also modified the macOS version of the app to enable users to use the AI chatbot with either a terminal or an IDE. Users can now ask ChatGPT to check out their code and help them fix bugs.
