OpenAI’s ChatGPT Quickly Restored After Brief Service Outage
OpenAI was swift to return ChatGPT online after several disruptions affected thousands of users, proving that reliability is dear to the organization as it opens new doors for growth.
Microsoft-backed OpenAI quickly fixed a short disruption in the access to its widely used AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which returned to normal for most of the users on Friday. OpenAI said in a statement that the technical problems were fixed by 4:34 p.m. PT (00:34 GMT Saturday), and some users were able to log back in by 5 p.m. PT (0100 GMT Saturday)
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the disruption on social media platform X, where he acknowledged the half-hour downtime with a frown emoji, stating, “We are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us.” Outage tracking site Downdetector.com reported that the outage impacted over 19,000 users.
Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has surged in popularity, drawing 250 million weekly active users. OpenAI’s rapid growth has led to a staggering valuation increase from $14 billion in 2021 to $157 billion, with revenue reaching $3.6 billion, surpassing Altman’s initial projections.
This brief disruption underscores OpenAI’s continued commitment to enhancing ChatGPT’s reliability as it grows in scale and user demand.
