OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Returns to the Board with Three New Members
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has rejoined the company’s board, alongside three notable additions.
Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former EVP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation; and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart, have joined Altman in board meetings.
The fresh additions, among them Altman returning to the board, will collaborate closely with the existing directors, Adam D’Angelo, CEO of Quora, Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury, and Bret Taylor, co-founder of Sierra.
“I am excited to welcome Sue, Nicole, and Fidji to the OpenAI Board of Directors. Their experience and leadership will enable the Board to oversee OpenAI’s growth and to ensure that we pursue OpenAI’s mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity,” said Bret Taylor, serving as the board’s chair.
WilmerHale’s independent legal review regarding Altman’s dismissal found no justification for his removal. Their statement clarified, “While the previous Board had the authority to terminate Mr. Altman, his conduct did not merit such action.”
Earlier in the year, Altman was removed from his position as CEO. In response to this development, Helen Toner, Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s chief scientist, and entrepreneur Tasha McCauley tendered their resignations.
