OpenAI Surpasses 1 Million Business Users, Achieves Major Growth

OpenAI says that ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Education plans have a million business customers. Companies such as Apple and Nvidia, with a valuation exceeding $100 billion, are closely monitoring the company, potentially resulting in price hikes.

OpenAI claims to have one million paying business customers for its ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Education plans. As of September, there had been a lot more activity than the 600,000 reports in April. This is because the large language models that power the conversational generative AI chatbot have been getting better all the time, including with the launch of GPT-4o earlier this summer.

The above graph appears to exclude personal plans like Plus $20 per month and the free tier, as well as paid business plans like Team $25 per month. Bloomberg reports that a significant portion of the company’s million business users reside in the US. Users from the UK, Germany, and Japan also add to the total.

OpenAI is reportedly considering raising the price for subscriptions that grant users access to new, more advanced LLMs such as Strawberry and Orion. A source, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed to The Information that preliminary discussions within the company indicate a potential increase in prices to $2,000 per month.

According to estimates, hundreds of millions of people use the free ChatGPT tier each month. As OpenAI continues to add to its ChatGPT services, more businesses are paying close attention. Apple and Nvidia are reportedly thinking about investing in the company, following Microsoft‘s early multibillion-dollar investment in the startup.

With the latest round of funding, OpenAI could be worth more than $100 billion. This is up from about $80 billion in February when the company was planning to sell shares to Thrive Capital. OpenAI is still mostly a private company, even though it makes some claims. It’s not entirely clear how many paying customers the platform has, and how many people have signed up for its subscription-based plans for consumers.
