OpenAI Launches ‘Operator’ to Automate Web Tasks

OpenAI’s new AI tool ‘Operator’  is designed to automate web tasks like clicking buttons, filling forms, and navigating menus, streamlining online interactions.

OpenAI, a leader in generative AI, presented a groundbreaking tool called Operator. This strong AI tool, shown on Thursday, is designed to improve how users interact with the web by handling online jobs automatically. The operator easily uses the buttons, menus, and writing fields on the screen.

OpenAI said in a blog post that this new development is an important step forward for AI, allowing models to use common tools and leading to many new uses.

The operator can help with chores like making to-do lists and planning vacations. It asks for your input after finishing a job and looks for your confirmation for things like entering login details. Right now, the tool is open to Pro users in the U.S.

AI agents are systems that can perform tasks like buying things and setting meetings without needing a person to do it. They are leading the way in AI technology right now.

On the same day, Perplexity, a rival of OpenAI, released an assistant for Android devices that uses agents. This assistant can make dinner reservations, arrange rides, and set reminders, along with other jobs. Last year, Apple added AI to Siri and worked with OpenAI to launch ChatGPT, with users’ permission.

Agent-based systems used to be difficult to work with, but now, thanks to step-by-step reasoning methods like OpenAI’s o1 model, these jobs are becoming easier.
