OpenAI Faces Rising Threats of Actors Misuse for Election Manipulation

This year, OpenAI has stopped more than 20 attempts to use its AI models for election meddling, such as spreading false information on social media and making fake news stories.

According to a report released on Wednesday, OpenAI has encountered numerous instances in which its AI models have been employed to produce fabricated content, such as long-form articles and social media remarks, with the intention of influencing elections.

The startup said that cybercriminals are using AI tools like ChatGPT more and more to help them do bad things like making and fixing malware and making fake content for websites and social media sites.

The company said that so far this year, it has stopped more than 20 attempts to do so. In August, it shut down a group of ChatGPT accounts that were being used to write stories about things like the U.S. elections.

On July 1, it also blocked a number of accounts from Rwanda that were used to post comments on social media site X about the polls in that country.

OpenAI also said that none of the efforts to change the results of global polls went viral or gained a loyal following.

As the U.S. gets ready for presidential elections, people are getting more worried about how AI tools and social media sites could be used to make and spread fake election-related content.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says that Russia, Iran, and China are becoming a bigger threat because they are trying to affect the elections on November 5. One way they do this is by using AI to spread false or divisive information.

After getting $6.6 billion in funding last week, OpenAI solidified its place as one of the most valuable private companies in the world.
