OpenAI Eyes Humanoid Robots: A Bold Step Toward AI-Powered Robotics
OpenAI is reportedly considering building humanoid robots integrated with its advanced AI models, marking a major step in the robotics field.
OpenAI, a world leader in artificial intelligence, is reportedly looking into making humanoid robots, which could mean that the company will be expanding into the robotics business. Reports from inside OpenAI say that the company has been talking about making robots that look and act like people using its cutting-edge AI models.
This isn’t OpenAI’s first time working with robots. The business used to have a robotics section, but it shut it down in 2021. Wojciech Zaremba, co-founder, said that not having enough training data was the main problem that kept them from making their robots as smart as they wanted to be. Even with this setback, OpenAI’s renewed interest shows that AI progress may have solved problems from the past.
OpenAI’s goals go beyond projects they work on themselves. The company has put money into a number of robotics projects through its venture arm. It joined a funding round for Figure AI, a business working on humanoid robots, in early 2024. Other big names in the industry that day included Microsoft, Nvidia, and Intel.
The AI leader has also partnered with 1X Technologies, integrating its GPT models into the startup’s robotics. More recently, OpenAI backed Physical Intelligence, focusing on AI software designed to enhance robots with human-like dexterity and problem-solving skills.
OpenAI’s ambitions in the robotics field were first suggested by job listings advertised earlier this year. Some of the positions for research engineers referred to the creation of multimodal large language models for new features in partner robots. This is in line with speculation that OpenAI, which was cofounded by Tesla’s Elon Musk, may be planning on developing human-like robots who can perform real world chores by voice commands.
Being the recent AI models released by OpenAI under o3 series that are more focused on advanced reasoning, OpenAI is ready to transform robotics. With a blend of artificial intelligence engineering and humanoid physical structure they could utilize robots into various sectors such as producing to service.
OpenAI’s potential entry into the robotics market remains vague, yet this is the biggest step. If successfully implemented, it could revolutionize the relationship between artificial intelligence and robotics to a level that accurately and actively defines the potency of artificially intelligent embodied robots.
As OpenAI moves ahead, people wonder how its next move will propel the future of robotics and artificial intelligence.
