Musk Threatens to Ban Apple Devices if OpenAI is Built into the OS

Elon Musk says he will not let his companies use Apple products if they add OpenAI’s AI software to their operating systems, because he is worried about security.

Musk has said that he will not allow Apple products at his businesses if the company that makes iPhones adds OpenAI’s AI software to the operating system. He calls this a security breach.

On Monday, Apple launched a long-awaited partnership with OpenAI, the company that made the generative AI tool ChatGPT. This is when he spoke.

According to Apple, at its yearly developers conference this year, ChatGPT will be free in iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, the next version of the desktop operating system. It will work with Siri.

If Apple builds OpenAI into the OS, my companies will not allow Apple products to be used. Mr. Musk said that was a breach of security that could not be tolerated on X, the social media site he runs. The billionaire, who is also the CEO of Tesla, an electric car company, and SpaceX, said that people will have to check in their Apple products at the door, where they will be kept in a Faraday cage.

Apple also announced on Monday the start of Apple Intelligence, a generative AI that will soon be available across all of its products. This is more than just artificial intelligence. At the meeting, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said that human intelligence was the company’s next big thing. But Mr. Musk doubted Apple’s ability to make sure that OpenAI would keep users’ information safe.

Musk’s Feud with OpenAI and the Launch of xAI

Mr. Musk had a fight with OpenAI, which he helped to start in 2015. He also sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in February, saying the company had given up on its original goal to help people and called it a “lie.” OpenAI, which has about $13 billion in investments from Microsoft, said that Mr. Musk was just sorry he wasn’t a part of the company’s success.

As the need for creative AI to compete with OpenAI grew, Mr. Musk started his own AI company called xAI in July of last year.It came out with Grok-1, a generative AI tool, in November, and Grok-1.5, which was better, in March. The company is marketing Grok as a “conversational AI for understanding the universe.” This is in line with Mr. Musk’s plans, which he laid out in July 2018: xAI was meant to “understand reality” and “the true nature of the universe.”At the launch of Grok-1, Mr. Musk also said that xAI would make Grok open source, which was another attack on OpenAI by him.
