Firmware that adds AI to its computers and promotes them as the best way to use AI could help the company persuade people to buy a PC instead of an Apple computer.
The company’s headquarters in Redmond, a suburb east of Seattle, hosted an event where they shared the news. The event took place the day before Build, the company’s main annual conference.

Google and Microsoft are competing hard to become the best places to get AI technology for phones, computers, the web, and their cloud computing services. After OpenAI released ChatGPT and started a rush into AI across the whole industry, both companies have been putting out new tools like crazy over the past year. However, the news from Google and Microsoft means that most people will soon be using generative AI in the technology they use every day, whether they like it or not. Microsoft will advertise their new laptops with built-in AI. To use the AI, you’ll press a special key on the keyboard, and it will work in more than one app. Google is putting AI answers at the top of search results, which makes web publishers angry because they think their content is being taken from their sites without their permission.

At the event on Monday, Microsoft showed off two new computers: a laptop and a tablet. Apart from that, it showed off computers with the new AI technology from six other PC makers, such as Lenovo, Dell, HP, and Samsung. The people from Microsoft said several times during the event that their new laptop was faster and had a longer battery life than the newest Apple MacBook Air.
A lot of the demos were about editing videos and photos, which are two main uses that Apple also promotes. Microsoft said that the AI technology will be able to translate any computer sound from 40 different languages to English. Users will also be able to use AI to search their photo library for photos of a certain trip. Once they find them, they can use an AI photo editor to change a photo’s background. The company demonstrated how its AI could translate various languages spoken during a video call into English captions. Adobe, the company that makes Photoshop, added AI editing tools to their software last year, which makes computers work harder. The company said the latest OpenAI AI models, GPT4o, will also be on Microsoft’s new computers. In early 2023, Microsoft made a deal with OpenAI worth billions of dollars. This gave Microsoft access to OpenAI’s technology, which it used in its tools.
