Microsoft Develops Top Secret Generative AI Tool for US Spies
Microsoft has made artificial intelligence that American spies can use. They think it is safe because it is not connected to the internet at all.
A top executive at the company told Bloomberg that it was the first time that a large language model worked without being connected to the internet in any way.
Most AI models, like Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, use cloud services to learn from data and figure out patterns.
But Microsoft said it wanted to give the US intelligence community a system that was really safe.
Chief Technology Officer for Strategic Missions and Technology at Microsoft, William Chappell, said that the system has a “air-gapped” environment that is separate from the internet.
At a security conference last month, Sheetal Patel, who is assistant director of the CIA’s Transnational and Technology Mission Centre, said, Collaborative AI is racing to get its hands on intelligence data.
She said that the race would be won by the first country to use generative AI for their intelligence. adding, I desire it to be us.
