Microsoft Adds AI Text Editing in Notepad for Windows Insiders

Microsoft is introducing AI-powered text editing in Notepad, allowing Windows Insiders to rephrase, adjust tone, and resize content.

Microsoft is integrating AI-powered text editing into Notepad, a basic text editor that debuted in 1983. The Windows Insider Blog reports that Windows Insiders receive the Rewrite feature in preview. It will let you use AI to “rephrase sentences, change tone, and change the length of your content.”

If you are a Windows Insider who got early access to the feature, you can try it out by selecting the text you want to change in Notepad, right-clicking it, and selecting “Rewrite.”

Then, Notepad will display a dialogue box where you can instruct it to modify the text, such as whether it should be longer or shorter. Rewrite will then provide you with three new versions of your work to choose from.

Rewrite “powers by a cloud-based service that requires authentication and authorization,” so you’ll need to log in to your Microsoft account to use it.

Microsoft is previewing this feature on Windows 11 in the US, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. In July, Microsoft finally added spell-checking and auto-correction to Notepad.

Microsoft Rolls Out AI Image Editing in Paint and Notepad

Microsoft will also let Insiders start testing the new AI image editing tools in Paint that were shown off last month. Notepad will also receive the addition of Rewrite. With the Generative Fill feature, you can add to an image based on a prompt. With the Generative Erase feature, you can erase parts of an image and fill in the gaps.

Testers with Copilot Plus PCs will be the first to get Generative Fill, but all Insiders on Windows 11 will be able to use Generative Erase.
