Meta’s AGI Ambition: Zuckerberg Plans Human-Like AI for Everyone

CEO Mark Zuckerberg says Meta is working on artificial general intelligence (AGI) to solve problems like a person. They want to build, open-source, and distribute it so everyone can use it.

As companies strive to understand artificial intelligence (AI), Meta is making significant strides towards AI that can solve problems like a humans and without any assistance.

In an Instagram video, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that his company was working on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and that their long-term goal is to “build general intelligence, open source it responsibly, and make it widely available so everyone can benefit.”

In the video posted on Thursday, he said, “It’s become clear that the next generation of services needs to be building full general intelligence, the best AI assistants, AIs for creators, AIs for businesses, and more. This requires advancements in all areas of AI, including reasoning, planning, coding, memory, and other cognitive abilities.

Open-source software allows anyone to create their chatbots, as it allows for unlimited copying and reuse of the code. However, OpenAI and Google have previously stated that open-source software poses a risk due to its potential for disseminating false information.

The project is centered around large language model (LLM) technology, such as Llama 3. LLMs can understand and create text in human language. The release date is unknown, but many expect it this year.

Meta is buying 350,000 H100 graphics cards from Nvidia so that Llama 3 can run. These cards are responsible for displaying images on your screen.

Zuckerberg said that building a “massive compute infrastructure” is part of the company’s “future roadmap” to reach its AI goals.

The CEO also said that the company is bringing together its two AI research teams, FAIR and GenAI, to work on building full general intelligence and making it available to everyone as much as possible.

He also talked about the metaverse and the new Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses. “People are also going to need new devices for AI, and this brings AI and the metaverse together over time,” he said.

“I believe many of us will talk to AI much more often during the day.” I believe many of us will wear glasses to facilitate this communication. This glass shape is best for AIs to see and hear what you do. “It’s always there to help,” he said.
