Meta is marking real photos as ‘AI-created’

Meta’s new “Made with AI” tag wrongly labels real photos, making people worry about content moderation accuracy as election season approaches.

People who take pictures say Meta is labeling their real pictures as “made with AI.” Meta created this automated tag to assist individuals in distinguishing between what they perceive and computer-generated content. However, AI cannot distinguish between artificial intelligence and other forms of technology.

Therefore, individuals such as a former White House photographer and a professional cricket team share pictures labeled as AI-generated.

The Impact of Photoshop on Instagram’s AI Detection

Pete Souza, the White House photographer, said that he thinks this might be because of simple changes photographers make to photos before uploading them.

That is, Instagram might notice if you upload a picture to Photoshop, crop it, and then save it as a new file. This makes sense since Instagram says its AI checks an image’s metadata to see if it is real.

As election season approaches, it will become more and more important for big social networks like Meta to be able to moderate AI-generated content properly.

However, is an “AI-created” tag truly effective if it lacks trustworthiness.
