Google is currently testing “Speaking Practice” a new feature in its search platform. This initiative aims to transform the way individuals acquire language skills.

This new tool uses artificial intelligence (AI) to run interactive language exercises to help people learning English improve their conversational skills.

The feature, currently under testing in Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Venezuela, is available to participants in Google’s Search Labs programme.

This project allows users to try out and provide feedback on early Google Search versions.

The “Speaking Practice” feature adds simulated conversations to the “Sentence Practice” feature, which came out in October and focused on practicing sentences with grammar and clarity feedback.

The AI asks people conversational questions and requires them to respond with specific words and phrases.

For example, in one scenario shown in screenshots shared by an X user, the AI might say it wants to get in better shape and ask, “What should I do?” For example, learners must use words like “exercise,” “heart,” and “tired” in their answers.

This feature serves two purposes: to make English learners feel more comfortable having conversations in English and to help them remember how to use words correctly in everyday situations.

Google’s move into making tools for learning languages isn’t completely new. The tech giant added a feature to Search in 2019 that lets users practice their pronunciation. This shows that it is committed to using AI for educational purposes.

With the addition of “Speaking Practice,” Google seems to be setting itself up as a strong competitor in the language learning market, possibly going up against well-known apps like Duolingo and Babbel.

Google wants to make learning languages easier for everyone and give people all over the world the tools they need to learn languages faster and better than ever. Its search platform is widely used and has cutting-edge AI features.
