European startup Mistral AI raised $640 million to fight with AI giants. This raised its valuation to $5.8 billion and showed how Europe’s generative AI sector is growing.

A big AI company in Paris called Mistral AI is said to have raised €468 million in equity funding, bringing its total value to €5.8 billion. After this round, the company has raised a total of €600 million, which includes debt.

Sources say that the round was led by new investor DST Global and current backer General Catalyst, which put money into Factorial and Hippocratic AI.

Recently, less than a year ago, the business raised $415 million in a Series A funding round led by A16z. At that time, the company was worth $2 billion. The people named Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix used to work for DeepMind and Meta. Mistral AI was made. People who made it have worked on big language models like the ones OpenAI has made. It has grown into a European rival to well-known US tech companies like OpenAI.

Microsoft agreed to sell Mistral AI’s games in February of this year. The US tech giant bought a piece of the French unicorn as part of the deal. The company focuses on AI that can speak more than one language, and its newest model can speak French, German, Spanish, Italian  Spanish and English. It is expected that the generative AI market will hit a huge $100 billion by 2030. This is because more and more people want AI-powered solutions that can automate tasks, make creative content, and make user experiences more unique. Generational AI has the ability to change many fields, from manufacturing and finance to healthcare and education.

Firms like OpenAI, Google AI, and DeepMind are already in the market, and Mistral AI has to deal with them. Mistral AI is different from its competitors because it is open source and focuses on making LLMs that work well and can be scaled up. That being said, Mistral AI’s latest round of funding shows that Europe’s generative AI environment is growing and is quickly becoming popular around the world.
