First AI LEGO Robot Head That Talks Like a Human Revived

Teenage designer brings back AI-powered LEGO robot Dave after getting praise around the world.

When Sten made Dave, he had no idea that people all over the world would love the world’s first AI LEGO robot so much.

The 17-year-old Dutchman who came up with the idea for Creative Mindstorms released a movie at the end of last year that showed off Dave’s skills. Dave is a work of art made of LEGO blocks and gears. He looks eerily like a person, right down to the wig that covers his head of hair.

An combination with ChatGPT is what makes Dave’s skills so powerful. This lets Dave have talks that flow naturally, which makes interactions feel incredibly real. Dave can talk and show emotions when he reacts to prompts and questions thanks to a mouth with moving corners and a jaw that moves up and down. Dave can speak both English and Dutch very well. Dave can even play games like kick the can.

Dave can read text, count, track hands and faces, recognise faces and items, track emotions, guess age and gender, and even tell the time and weather. He has almost 1,100 lines of code to do all of this.

Sten had to take Dave apart because he didn’t have enough LEGO blocks for his other projects. But a lot of fan comments, user support, and channel ads have helped him put Dave back together.

Sten went on YouTube and posted videos about the process, his joy, and the problems he ran into. Sten started putting the AI-powered LEGO robot back together using pictures he had taken while taking it apart as a guide. A song made for the project by ChatGPT and the music-producing AI Udio also helped him get going.

Even though he was excited, the process was frustrating. Sten often found missing pieces and had to look over pictures carefully to make sure they were correct. When it came to software, there was a more worrying sign. As Sten worked, he found that some of Dave’s software was out of date. The Dutch creator pointed out the changes that needed to be made, such as a new way to use the ChatGPT API.
