Elon Musk’s xAI Breaks New Ground with Major AI Data Center Milestone

Elon Musk’s xAI data centre turns on 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips, which is a big step forward.

SEMAFOR announced yesterday that Elon Musk’s “Colossus” xAI data centre in Memphis has reached a major milestone by turning on all 100,000 advanced Nvidia H100 chips at the same time. With this accomplishment, Colossus is now the most powerful computer ever built. This is a huge technical accomplishment for the young company, which turned the facility into a working computer in less than six months.

Musk says the data centre is the biggest in the world, but experts in the field doubt that xAI will be able to manage such a large number of GPUs effectively. According to reports, no other company has been able to connect 100,000 GPUs because of problems with networking. Turning on Colossus enables xAI to train an AI model with unparalleled computing power. Grok, an uncensored alternative to ChatGPT, benefits greatly from this.
