Elon Musk Issues Latest Warning About AI - Brace Yourself for What's Coming

Elon Musk has stated that there is a 1-in-5 chance that artificial intelligence (AI) will end up posing an existential threat to humanity, Business Insider reported.

It’s possible, in my opinion, that it will wipe out humanity. Musk stated at a seminar during the “Great AI Debate” that “I probably agree with Geoff Hinton that it’s about 10% or 20% or something like that.”

He stated, “I believe that the likely positive scenario outweighs the negative scenario,” but he did not elaborate on how he had reached this conclusion.

Roman Yampolskiy, an AI safety researcher and the director of the University of Louisville’s Cyber Security Laboratory, responded to Business Insider by endorsing the Musk assertion.

Though he acknowledged that technology might pose an existential threat to humanity, Musk’s analysis was a little too pessimistic.

“Actual p(doom) [probability of doom] is much higher in my opinion,” he stated. “I’m not sure why he believes pursuing this technology in any case is a good idea.If he is concerned about competitors getting there first, it doesn’t matter as uncontrolled super intelligence is equally bad, no matter who makes it come into existence.”
