Bill Gates expressed to Open AI CEO Sam Altman that he is worried AI will take his job

In a recent edition of his podcast series “Unconfuse Me with Bill Gates,” Gates talked with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about the current state of AI and its possible future.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has said that he is surprise at how smart AI models like ChatGPT . Even though Gates said he didn’t fully understand how these models handle complicated data like Shakespearean texts, he said, “I was very sceptical,” which was a big step forward in AI technology. I did not think it would get that good.

Altman explained why interpretability research is becoming more important. The goal of this research is to figure out how AI encodes and operates in a complex way. Altman saw similarities between figuring out how the human brain works and figuring out how AI works. He expressed optimism that a full understanding of AI technology would eventually contribute to its growth and increased use. Altman said this about OpenAI’s early work on GPT-1: “When OpenAI built GPT-1, they didn’t have a deep understanding of how it worked or why it worked.”

Gates talked about how AI could help solve important problems around the world, such as complicated social problems and improving healthcare and education. However, he also expressed worries about the effects of advanced artificial intelligence, especially the possibility of losing a lot of jobs.

Bill Gates admitted, “I might even lose my job.”
With a sense of existential confusion, Gates said, “I get a lot of excitement from the fact that, hey, I’m good at working on malaria, eradicating malaria, getting smart people to work on that, and using resources to do that.” When the machine tells me, “Bill, go play pickleball; I’m getting rid of malaria,” I do. If someone says, “You’re just a slow thinker,” that’s a philosophically confusing statement.”
