Apple’s Secret AI Talks with Baidu: The Future of iOS REVEALED

Apple’s Pursuit of Top AI Models for iOS 18 Integration

It is well known that Apple plans to include significant AI features in its upcoming major iOS release. There have been a lot of rumors circulating regarding possible collaborations to introduce generative AI to the iPhone. It appears that the tech giant is now searching widely for the top AI models.

There were rumors earlier this week that Apple and Google were in negotiations to license Google’s amazing Gemini AI for use in future iOS 18 features. They seem to have also been in conversation with OpenAI about incorporating their popular ChatGPT technology. According to recent information, Apple is also considering forming an AI alliance in China.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple and Baidu recently discussed using the AI models developed by the Chinese tech company. In doing so, Apple would be able to provide its Chinese customers with AI intelligence without violating local laws that demand official approval for AI systems.

Despite censorship preventing the use of industry leaders like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT in China, the government has approved over 40 domestic AI models to date, including Baidu’s much-discussed ErnieBot.

Apple’s AI Strategy for iOS 18: Hybrid Model and External Collaborations

Apple might be thinking about using multiple AI providers. Although no specific partnership has been confirmed as of yet, plans are in place for agreements to be finalized in advance of Apple’s yearly developer conference in June, which will pave the way for the release of the AI-enhanced iOS 18.

According to rumors, there will be a hybrid on-device/cloud model wherein some AI processing will take place locally on iPhones and more complex number-crunching will be transferred to distant servers run by partner technologies such as Gemini, ChatGPT, or Ernie.

Although there are reports that Apple is developing its own generative AI internally, the company appears focused on enhancing its capabilities through these outside collaborations. Perhaps Apple is attempting to obtain an advantage in the AI race through some astute alliances, following years of surpassing its competitors in mobile chips and cameras.
