Apple Talks with OpenAI for iPhone Generative AI Features
Apple Inc. and OpenAI have started talking again about how to use OpenAI’s generative AI technology to power some new iPhone features coming out later this year.
According to a report citing people familiar with the matter, the companies have begun discussing the terms of a potential deal and the addition of OpenAI features to iOS 18, Apple’s upcoming operating system for the iPhone.
Apple was in talks last month to use Google’s Gemini chatbot for new iPhone features.
Apple hasn’t decided for sure which partners it will work with It could agree with both OpenAI and Alphabet Inc.’s Google, or it could choose a different provider.
Apple has been slower than competitors like Microsoft and Google to add generative AI to their products. This type of AI can respond to written questions in a way that seems human.
In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company was putting “significant” money into generative AI and that the company would talk more about how it plans to use the technology later this year.
