Amazon Urges Worldwide Rules for Responsible AI
Amazon wants everyone to agree on how to use AI responsibly so that innovation and safety can coexist. They stress the importance of working together, being open, and upholding democratic values.
A year after the biggest tech companies in the US agreed to the Biden administration’s voluntary plans to deal with the risks that artificial intelligence (AI) poses, Amazon said that everyone in the world needs to agree on how to handle AI responsibly.
David Zapolsky, senior vice president of global public policy and general counsel, stated in an article on Amazon’s website on July 22, “It’s now very clear we can have rules that protect against risks while also making sure we don’t slow down innovation.”
“However, we still need to get everyone in the world to agree on responsible AI measures to protect U.S. security and economic growth.”
Zapolsky said that one way to make this approach to responsible AI work is for all companies working with AI to promise to use the technology responsibly.
To stop the spread of false information, this could include steps like the one Amazon has taken by adding invisible watermarks to its tool that lets users make images.
All businesses should be transparent about AI creation and use, according to Zapolsky. For example, Amazon has created AI Service Cards that inform customers of Amazon Web Services (AWS) of the limits of its AI services, the best practices for responsible AI, and how to safely build AI applications.
Zapolsky asserted that collaboration and information sharing between businesses and governments constitute a crucial aspect of AI. In this case, Zapolsky brought up the U.S.
Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium. The National Institute of Standards and Technology established this group to enhance research and measurement of AI safety.
Collaboration and Commitment
Zapolsky said, “For the U.S. and our allies to get the most out of AI while minimizing its risks, we must continue to work together to set AI guardrails that are in line with democratic values, protect economic prosperity and security, ensure global interoperability, encourage competition, and boost safe and responsible innovation.”
The White House said on July 21, 2023, that Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI had voluntarily agreed to help the development of AI technology in a way that is safe, secure, and open.
These promises include many steps that will help us learn more about the dangers and moral issues connected to AI, while also making things clearer and limiting how it can be used incorrectly.
