AI-Generated Political Ads Face New FCC Rules Under Proposed Guidelines

To avoid misleading content in the 2024 elections, the FCC is suggesting new rules that would require political ads to say when AI is used.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States has suggested rules that would make it easier to see how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in TV and radio political ads.

A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) says that the FCC wants people who have to report political ads on TV and radio to say whether AI technologies were used to make the ads and, if so, they have to say how AI was used in the ads.

People in the U.S. are becoming more worried that misleading content made by AI will have an unfair effect on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, which is why the FCC wants to make new rules. It gave specific examples of how voices and images made by AI have been used in misleading election ads in the past few months.
